Notices, Announcements, and Open Letters sent to Caledon

  1. An open letter to the good people of Caledon

Ladies, Gentlemen, Steampunks, and Other residents of this happy place.

The librarians of Information Island salute you and thank you, for the welcome you have given us to your inspired region. It is our hope, that with your aid and guidance, we shall in time create a library that will provide such amusement as you seek for idle hours, and such instruction as you crave for studious ones.

Our plan, as currently formed, is to acquire materials of the following sorts

Item: a browsing collection, to range widely over novels, plays, poetry, reflections of both the sombre and the humourous sorts, accounts of travel, miscellaneous improving literature, and journals and magazines, written or popularly published between the years of 1800 & 1900

Item: an on-line research collection, where those who wish to embellish their lives, persons, houses, lands, &c, may look into the several delvings & investigations of those who have been inspired to create websites treating of the minds, manners, morals, mores, and machinations of the 19th century.

Item: auditory books, or in plainer speech recordings, of poems, stories, plays, and what else may providently come to our attention

To this we propose to add, from time to time, sundry ephemeral exhibits, such as may inform, edify, or help the casual loiterer and chance visitor pass a pleasant quarter of an hour.

Such is our intent, but should you not deem these suitable to your needs we petition, that you will recommend to us any other plan, that will with advantage serve your purposes and desires.

There was lately made to us, a request that we compile for the public benefit a Tradesmen’s Directory, naming those who trade in goods, such as might be sought by any persons who pursue the Caledonian vision of life. No task would give us greater pleasure, and to that end we respectfully request, that you will aid us by providing the names and addresses of such tradespersons (and other mercantile beings) who deal in Victoriana, Gothica, Steampunkery, et al, and have given satisfaction in their dealings with you. Such information may be sent, by any convenient means, to JJ Drinkwater.

Residents of this fair isle have requested the we build a collection of textures, gestures, animations, &c, appropriate for use in these environs. This, also, we shall undertake, but here again will hope to draw upon the knowledge & discernment you possess in such high and apparent degree. You will do us great kindness, if you will recommend categories by general description, as well as specific items, for these collections. But speak, and we shall seek them out.

And should any of the Artificers, Makers, Builders, Designers, Inventors, Shapers & Right Good Technical Whizz-Bangs of Caledon be moved to donate to these same collections, their generosity will be met with no less of gratitude than of admiration. We shall in due course for this purpose set up some suitable receptacle in the library.

Finally, if it should (as has been lately intimated) be the desire of any folk of here to wield their pens with the purpose of recording, clarifying, obfuscating, mythologizing and otherwise committing to the hands of posterity the history of this region (this most delightful land, this isle of invention, this workshop of wonders, this emerald jewel set in a silver sea, this blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this Caledon…ahem…) the Library will be honored to act as home to the Archives of Caledon, and there preserve such chronicles as it shall please them to create.

In closing, pray permit us to express again the pleasure we take in being made welcome here.

    Respectfully, for The Committee

    JJ Drinkwater
    Librarian
