[14:08]  You: Hypatia?

[14:08]  Hypatia Dejavu: The reference group is managing the big shift to info international.

[14:09]  Hypatia Dejavu: We're going to keep the old desk here on info island, though it's moving to a side, shrinking, and it's not going to be manned full time.

[14:09]  Hypatia Dejavu: But we are going to cover it via a new set of monitoring devices.

[14:09]  Yohan Althouse: I saw those the other day

[14:09]  Hypatia Dejavu: All in all we're doing well and the staff keeps growing towards that 24/7 coverage we all want.

[14:10]  You: Great :) Thanks...

[14:10]  Valibrarian Gregg: I used it yesterday and it worked well.

[14:10]  Hypatia Dejavu: So, good work folks :)

[14:10]  You: Cindy, do you wan to update us on the genealogy group?

[14:11]  Cindy Elkhart: We are going to have military display in Nov and a ball and memorial services on Nov. 11

[14:11]  You: Rocky... collections? So you can be typing...

[14:11]  Cindy Elkhart: and right now we have display for Family history month that Abbey has put up

 [14:12]  You: Thanks Cindy :)

[14:12]  Rocky Vallejo: Collections are coming to life on Info Island but we still need volunteers to develop them.

[14:12]  Rocky Vallejo: If any of you would like to help provide resources

[14:12]  Rocky Vallejo: which can include URLs and LMs to other locations in SL with resources

[14:12]  Rocky Vallejo: please let me know. We'll take any level of help you can supply.. from the ground up to supplying us with URLs... please send me an IM or email me at

 [14:12]  Rocky Vallejo: sixsunflowers@gmail.com

[14:12]  You: Are there other groups or individual projects anyone would like to report on? I will do a report on Info International and Infotainment, shortly.

[14:13]  Daisyblue Hefferman: Rocky, what subject areas are you looking for?

[14:13]  Cat Galileo: I am talking at an expo in SL next week

[14:13]  You: which Cat?

[14:13]  Cat Galileo: and would like to give examples of businesses cooperating with libraries in SL

[14:13]  Hypatia Dejavu: When Cat? So I can make sure the desk's covered.

[14:13]  Cat Galileo: I know the biggies

[14:13]  You: ok

[14:14]  Cat Galileo: depo Consulting, a registered full-service developer in Second Life, will be hosting their first annual "Virtual Business Services & Products Expo" at the depo Business Park on October 19, 2007.

[14:14]  You: Troy, how's the Science Center progressing?

[14:14]  Cat Galileo: but if anyone has ancecdotes to share that would be super :)

[14:14]  You: Congrats to the assessibility folks and Health Info for the news article :)

[14:15]  You: HVX?

[14:15]  HVX Silverstar: I will be doing the filmmaking intro for the virtual libraries program on oct. 15

[14:15]  Troy McLuhan: The Science Center helped publicize around 30 science-related events in SL last month

[14:15]  You: wonderful on both counts :)

[14:15]  You: thanks!

[14:16]  HVX Silverstar: and will begin a series of intro machinima classes at the machinima institute at the end of OCt. - the year on Saturdays

[14:16]  HVX Silverstar: the Intermediate program with Alliance Library and UIUC

[14:16]  Rocky Vallejo: Rachelville will be setting up a display for National Children's Book Week (U.S>) which occurs in Novemeber.. we currrently have a display up on Halloween literature for children.. there's also an audlt display with literature links on Info Island

[14:16]  You: cool :)

[14:16]  You: very neat Rocky...

[14:17]  You: get some publicity for that :)

[14:17]  You: ok.. updates on the new sims..

 [14:17]  You: Info International

[14:17]  You: The planning group for Info International has done an excellent job in creating this sim for international community and conversation! The resources available there are a mixture of SL resources in many languages and information on the countries and people who speak these languages.

[14:17]  You: There are small spaces available for languages that have a smaller base, and if anyone wants to create one of these, please contact me. We also have room to expand if we feel we should cover a new language area. The island consists of:

[14:18]  You: Welcome Center/ Reference Desk - located just over the sim border, south of Info Island. From this vantage point the reference librarians and other volunteers will be able to direct people to places on both sims.

[14:18]  You: Alliance Library System World Headquarters is at the center of the island, with office space for ALS staff and meeting space for any that would like to use it.

[14:18]  You: International House - a place for conversation for everyone.

[14:18]  You: International Plaza - the place for smaller language groups to have space if requested.

[14:18]  You: Mi Pueblo - Spanish speaking cafe area.

[14:18]  You: China Cafe - Chinese speaking cafe and resource center.

[14:18]  You: International Park & Exhibits - Exhibit on displaced persons, people who no longer have a homeland.

[14:18]  You: Language areas for: Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Scandinavian, and Japanese.

[14:19]  You: There is a small meeting area across the bridge at International Park and another near the ALS building with a stage.

[14:19]  You: Info International opens on October 14th. There will be one session in the morning at 6 AM and another at Noon. Each will have special events, tours, quizzes, contests, prizes, dancing, etc.

[14:19]  You: Elaine would you like to add anything about the early session?

[14:19]  You: And Rolig about the Noon session?

[14:19]  Elaine Tulip: To accommodate the Chinese, our ceremony will be earlier in the day

[14:20]  Elaine Tulip: we will have a brief speech conducted in English and Chinese with a firecracker ceremony, three kinds of tea, and guided tours

[14:20]  Elaine Tulip: the China Cafe also flows over to the Japan Garden for a nice tour

[14:20]  Elaine Tulip: Tai chi on the rooftoop

[14:21]  You: The group planning and building this island has been a model group :) It is a wonderful area and I encourage you all to go see it :)

[14:21]  Rolig Loon: We're still finalizing the noon schedule. Hope to have it out early in the week. As Abbey said, speeches, gam es, dancing, tours, etc. Oh, and fireworks!

[14:21]  You: Now Infotainment

[14:21]  You: Infotainment opens the weekend of November 3/4. We plan to have a party at the Jazz Cat on Saturday night and a concert at the Pantheon on Sunday, will the other venues holding open houses before hand. Located on Infotainment is: Jazz Cat, Pantheon theater, Shadow's museum, Henry James House, Science Center, Space music Museum and Music Museum.

[14:21]  You: There are also vendor spaces available on Infotainment, so that rent may defray the island's expenses.

[14:22]  You: We want the Jazz Cat to be open 24/7 :) It should be a place that attracts visitors... Puglet Dancer is managing it, but she's in London at the moment. If anyone would like to volunteer to be a host at the Jazz Cat, please contact her.

[14:23]  You: Attracting visitors depends on having people around :) We've seen the sucess of the welcome centers... it is the heart of Info :)

[14:23]  You: Other announcements:

[14:24]  You: Rolig Loon is presenting a professional development session on how to be your own professional advocate. In her words "Most of us hesitate to brag about ourselves. To advance in your profession, though, that’s exactly what you need to do. In this session, we will talk about how to let your employer and colleagues know what you do and why you do it. We will discuss how to create and maintain a professional portfolio, and how to present yourself in an application for promotion or a new position. Emphasis will be on academic environments, but the concepts are generally applicable elsewhere."

[14:24]  You: This will be held at the Cybrary City I Open Air Auditorium Oct. 8th at 5 PM SLT.

[14:24]  You: Coming Nov. 8th Stolvano Barbosa will do a BUZZ/book discussion for librarians - David Weinberger's Everything Is Miscellaneous: The Power of the New Digital Disorder. New York: Times Books, 2007. ISBN: 9780805080438

[14:24]  You: We've had some great professional development and BUZZ (discussion) sessions in the last few months. If anyone would like to lead one, just let me know!

[14:24]  You: TX950 party next Friday is Oktoberfest :) at 6 PM

[14:25]  You: If you are wondering how you find out about events there are a few ways...through group announcements, be sure you are either in the librarians of SL group or the SL Library 2.0 group; through the event announcer slide viewers in the welcome centers; through the Alliance google group (if you aren't a memember and want to be let Lori or me know); and through the Google calendar:

[14:25]  You: http://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=3bb3buph2sacrtvmici65p80tk%40group.calendar.google.com

[14:26]  You: We have a great group of volunteers here... I can't tell you how much you all mean to this project :) It is what it is because of you!

[14:27]  You: I've asked Hypatia to talk with us a moment on managing the sims for the benefit of all (not creating lag) She has also agreed to do a buzz session for a longer version of this discussion...

[14:27]  You: Hypatia?

[14:28]  Hypatia Dejavu: I'm not standing up because I've got a small client problem at the moment.

[14:28]  Hypatia Dejavu: But lag's an ongoing issue on any sim.

[14:29]  Hypatia Dejavu: Especially on sims that are public places, like exhibits and stores...or libraries

[14:29]  Hypatia Dejavu: This gets compounded because we're using a coalition approach where each group works seperately.

[14:30]  Hypatia Dejavu: We all need to coexist on these islands so it's important to minmize lag.

[14:30]  Hypatia Dejavu: Each of the groups can do this in their individual areas by considering the effect on overall performance.

[14:30]  Hypatia Dejavu: So what causes lag?

[14:30]  Hypatia Dejavu: He's some items to consider:

[14:31]  Hypatia Dejavu: Scripts cause lag on the sim server, the best scripts are touch scripts because they don't constantly run.

[14:32]  Hypatia Dejavu: Listen scripts (the ones that take verbal instructions) put a constant strain on the sim.

[14:32]  Hypatia Dejavu: So minimizing scripts is important, and asking if your scripts are creating a heavy load is a good quesiton to ask the estate managers.

[14:33]  Hypatia Dejavu: Another cause of lag is textures.

[14:33]  Elaine Tulip: we should also look at temporary rezzer devices

[14:33]  Hypatia Dejavu: Temp rezzers are murder on a sim Elaine.

[14:33]  Elaine Tulip: we took one down at the China Cafe b/c of those issues

[14:33]  Hypatia Dejavu: Particle effects aren't as bad but they do cause client lag.

[14:34]  Hypatia Dejavu: Textures should ideally not be animated or rotated.

[14:34]  Hypatia Dejavu: If you can use a limited pallet (where it works) it also makes life much easier on the client.

[14:34]  Hypatia Dejavu: If you can use a limited pallet (where it works) it also makes life much easier on the client.

[14:35]  Hypatia Dejavu: Obviously animated structures do need to be considered as they place a load on the sim through scripts and physics as well as a client load.

[14:35]  Hypatia Dejavu: The last part of lag is prims.

[14:36]  Hypatia Dejavu: Not only do prims count against the sim limit of 15000 but certain kinds of prims do create lag.

[14:36]  Hypatia Dejavu: Minimizing sculpties and tori is a good idea.

[14:36]  Hypatia Dejavu: I'm not saying to over simplify.

[14:37]  Hypatia Dejavu: But it's important to consider the overall effect that your displays have on the sim.

[14:37]  Rocky Vallejo: How about plants/flowers that have flexy in them... "move in the wind"?

[14:37]  Hypatia Dejavu: SL residents do not like laggy places.

[14:37]  Hypatia Dejavu: Flexi is a lag generator.

[14:37]  Troy McLuhan: My holo-emitter system is designed to be low-lag. You could use it to hide stuff in memory until visitors want to see it.

[14:38]  Cat Galileo: I'm hoping to do that, but a lot of my stuff I ondt have full perms

[14:38]  Hypatia Dejavu: However, 10 different plants that are flexi create ten lag sources, but 10 identicle flexi plants create one lag source.

[14:38]  Hypatia Dejavu: Troy, it's a good design.

[14:38]  Hypatia Dejavu: And a great exhibit.

[14:39]  Hypatia Dejavu: It doesn't seem to contribute much to the lag, though we couldn't do many of those of course :)

[14:39]  Rolig Loon: How about devices like the new monitor at the desk?

[14:39]  Rocky Vallejo: I can see a holo design for collections that are within one defined subject area... medicine, U.S. History, etc... but not as a group gathering together varied subjects .. such as art, mathematics, literature

[14:39]  Hypatia Dejavu: The monitor's been created with the intent of being very low lag.

[14:40]  Hypatia Dejavu: It does create some of course and that was considered.

[14:40]  Troy McLuhan: Does it use a sensor or llVolumeDetect?

[14:40]  Hypatia Dejavu: Troy, I'm not the scripter on that, April Heaney is. I can ask her if you like.

[14:41]  You: It looks like a buzz session on this will be very helpful :) Thanks Hypatia... we'll let everyone know when we set a date.

[14:41]  Troy McLuhan: ok

[14:41]  Hypatia Dejavu: Ok, we'll do that.

[14:41]  You: thanks again!

[14:41]  Hypatia Dejavu: Just think about it folks.

[14:41]  Hypatia Dejavu: Thanks Abbey.

[14:41]  You: Are there any other reports, issues, problems, compliments :) ?

[14:41]  Marimar Berchot: Is there a way i can show a powerpoint presentation?

[14:41]  Marimar Berchot: i want to do a program for the day of the dead

[14:41]  You: when Marimar?

[14:42]  You: where?

[14:42]  Marimar Berchot: hopefully at Mi Pueblo

[14:42]  You: we can help you with that... yes

[14:42]  Marimar Berchot: great thanks

[14:42]  Daisyblue Hefferman: Renaissance Island put on a very nice festival yesterday.

[14:42]  Rolig Loon: I have converted all my powerpoint to textures for dumping onto a prim in real time, Marimar

[14:42]  You: Great :)

[14:42]  Marimar Berchot: oh good Rolig,

[14:42]  Marimar Berchot: you can teach me then?

[14:43]  Daisyblue Hefferman: Is it possible to add a tp board for Info Is. to the desk on info intnl? so much easier to direct folks to info areas.

 [14:43]  Rolig Loon: sure

[14:43]  Marimar Berchot: tu

[14:43]  You: Ok then... Lori anything to add? I have one more announcement for the very end...

[14:43]  Marimar Berchot: :)

[14:43]  Troy McLuhan: I don't think you can teleport someone from one sim to another, but you can give them a landmark

[14:43]  Hypatia Dejavu: That's right Troy.

[14:43]  You: The ALA banned books week was wonderful :) Good job on that Lori!

[14:44]  Hypatia Dejavu: Intersim teleportation's dicey but people are working on it.

[14:44]  You: Ok... one final announcement then :)

[14:44]  Lorelei Junot: thanks to everyone who worked on banned books week

[14:44]  Cat Galileo: I've learned you can put a SLURL in the library monitors we use

[14:44]  You: Like I said... you all mean so very much to this project, and we are SO proud of the job you do... and understand how much of your time and effort you give..

[14:44]  You: we're calling a moratorium on meetings and new projects for the month of December. Let's take it easy and enjoy our RLs and our SLs that month.

[14:45]  You: Anyone that wants to plan an event, dance, party, etc. for December may certainly do so... events are the highlight of any holiday season. But I think that all of us feel the need to relax a bit :) So unless it is a real emergency no meetings in December!

[14:45]  Rolig Loon: Yay.

[14:45]  Marimar Berchot: k

[14:45]  Marimar Berchot: :)

[14:45]  You: let's enjoy life... both real and second :)

[14:45]  You: Thank you all for coming...
